  1. Week 3 Monday September 18th 2023 English 2 – Period 2 UNIT 1: AT MYBIRTHDAY PARTY LESSON 2 I. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge: - say the letter P/p, the words pasta, popcorn, pizza, the phrases/sentences containing /p/ and pasta, pizza, popcorn, the sentence structure I like ____. in a chant. - listen and recognise the words popcorn, pasta and the sentence structure I like _____. - write the letter P/p and complete the words _izza, _opcorn, _asta. 2. Competences: - Oral communication: introduce themselves - Co-operation: ready to help friends in pair work/ group work. - Sociability: Talk to each other, say good words to others. 3. Attitude/ Qualities: - Kindness: Help partners to complete learning tasks. - Honesty: tell the truth about feelings and emotions. II. TEACHING AIDS: - Student’s book, page 7 - sachmem.vn - Teacher’s guide, pp. 9-11 - Workbook, pp. 4-5 - Flashcards to play games in Warm-up - Computer, projector III. PROCEDURES: Classroom Teaching and learning activities management Warm-up 5 minutes Option 1 Whole class - Ask pupils what letter and sound they learnt in Lesson 1 (P/p, /p/). - Show pictures of the words that pupils learnt in Lesson 1 (pasta, pizza, popcorn) and encourage them to say the words in chorus. More advanced classes can add other words beginning with the letter P/p. Option 2 Ask the class to play Kim’s game again, using the words in Lesson Group work
  2. 1, Unit 1 and those in the previous units, saying Now let us play Kim’s game! Option 3 Get pupils to play What’s Missing? Game, using the pictures and Group/ flashcards with the incompleted words _asta, _opcorn and _izza. Pair work Pupils should guess the missing letters and say the words correctly. 3. Listen and chant. 10 minutes Whole class - Draw pupils’ attention to the picture and have them point to the pasta (say “Look at the picture. Point to the pasta.”). - Say “I like pasta.” and encourage pupils to repeat. To reinforce their understanding, use gestures or draw a smiley face on the Whole class board. - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for pizza and popcorn. Whole class - Play the recording of the chant to familiarize pupils with the Whole class words and rhythm (say “Listen.”). - Have pupils point to each line of the chant (e.g. say “Point to Individual work line one.”). Play the recording of each line and encourage pupils to Whole class chant (say “Listen and chant.”). - Play the recording in full and encourage pupils to chant (say Whole class “Listen and chant.”). Pupils can clap along or do other actions to help them keep the rhythm. - Divide the class into two teams. Teams take it in turns to chant a Group work line. The whole class can clap along or do other actions. 4. Listen and tick. 7 minutes - Have pupils look at the pictures (say “Point and say.”). When Whole class pupils answer correctly, c o n f i r m by saying “popcorn/ noodles/ pasta/ pizza”. - Play the recording and allow pupils time to complete the activity Individual work (say “Listen and tick.”). - Play the recording again, if necessary (say “Listen again.”). Individual work - Check the answers by asking “a or b?” When pupils answer correctly, confirm by saying “1a. I like popcorn.”/“2a. I like Whole class pasta.” and encourage them to repeat. Individual work 5. Look and write. 8 minutes - Write the letter P (upper case) on the board and say “P” (/piː/). Whole class - Write the letter P (upper case) on the board again, but this time more slowly. Invite a few pupils to come to the front of the class Individual work and write the letter P (upper case) on the board. - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for p (lower case). - Have pupils look at the writing grids (say “Look and write.”) Whole class Allow pupils time to complete the activity. Go around the class to Individual work offer support and feedback. - Have pupils look at the picture and labels (say “Look and Individual work write.”). Allow pupils time to complete the activity.   3. class to offer support and feedback. Wrap–up 5 minutes Option 1 Whole class - Have pupils listen to the recording, then say the chant again. Option 2 - Ask pupils to look at the pictures in 4. Listen and circle and Whole class say about them, e.g. popcorn, noodles, ... Encourage better pupils to use learnt structures e.g. I like popcorn.; I can see noodles.; ... Option 3 Individual work - To reinforce the vocabulary, get pupils to do Activity 1, Unit 1 in their workbooks. IV. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to: - Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts (pictures) focusing on greetings, responding to greetings and saying goodbye. - Use the names Ben, Mai, Minh, Lucy, the words hello, hi, bye, goodbye, and the sentence patterns Hello, / Hi, I’m _____.; How are you? and Fine, thank you. in relation to the topic “Greetings”; Use Goodbye / Bye ______. to say goodbye. - Listen and recognize the characters, then repeat; Self-introducing; Perform listening tasks; Work in pairs or groups II. Option 1: Point to a pupil and have him/her stand up and say Hi, I’m Whole class Other pupils wave back and say Hi. Repeat with other pupils. Point faster and faster to make this more fun. Group work Option 2: Game: Picking coconut Step 1: Divide the class into 4 teams: A, B, C, D. Step 2: Set the rules: Teacher says (or plays the recording of) a number and let the teams take turns to answer. Pupils have to click the correct number on the screen. If the answer is correct, 1 point is given to that team. - Encourage pupils to join the game. - Give points to the teams and encourage the students. EXPLORATION Activity 1. Look, listen and repeat. 8 minutes Step 1: Have pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify the Whole class characters in the pictures. Whole class/ Step 2: Ask pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording for them to Individual work listen. Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat. Follow the same procedure with Picture b. Fine, thank you. and Goodbye/ Bye. Tell pupils that the sentences are used to greet, respond too greetings, and say goodbye. Activity 2. Listen, Point and say. 8 minutes Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the pictures a-b. Tell them about the Whole class/ activity. Elicit the name of each character. Individual work Step 2: Point at Picture a and the sentence Fine, thank you. under it. Check comprehension and give feedback. Play the recording for
  5. pupils to repeat the sentences in both bubbles a few times. Remind pupils to point at the relevant character in the picture when they are repeating. Repeat the same procedure with picture b. Step 3: Draw pupils’ attention to the first bubble. Explain the meaning. Elicit the missing words in the second bubble. Play the recording for pupils to repeat the sentences in both bubbles a few times. Remind pupils to point at the relevant character in the picture when they are repeating. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b. Step 4: Give pupils time work in pairs to take turns to say the role of Pair work each character in picture a and picture b. Step 5: Invite a few pupils to come to the front of the classroom, Pair work/ Whole point at the relevant character in each picture, and act out his/ her class role. Game: Role play Pair work Have pupils work in pairs, then change partners for several times. Invite pupils to go to the board and role play. Encourage pupils to practice speaking English. Activity 3. Let’s talk. 8 minutes Step 1: Draw pupil’s attention to the picture. Elicit the context (see Whole class/ Input) and the missing words. Write the answers on the board. Individual work Complete the sentences. Invite two pupils to take turns to play each character’s role. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the procedure with the second exchange. Pair work Step 2: Put pupils into pairs to do the task. Go around the classroom to offer support where necessary. Step 3: Invite some pairs to the front of the classroom to take turns to act out the exchanges. Game: Pass the ball Step 1: Set the rules: Give 2 balls to pupils and turn on the music. Pupils pass the ball until the music stops. The one who is keeping the Whole class/ ball will talk with his/ her friends, asking “How are you?”, the others Individual work have to say the answers. Group work Option 2: Game: Numbers Divide the class into 4 groups. Invite pupils to go to the monitor and touch to choose the numbers. Pupils will get points for their teams if Group work the answers are correct. Give points to the groups and encourage them. Activity 4. Listen and number. 8 minutes Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the pictures. Elicit the names of Whole class the characters in each picture. Tell them about this activity and show them how to do the task. Play the recording for the first conversation. Elicit the answer and give feedback. Put number 1 in the box of Picture d. Play the recording again for pupils to check the answer. Whole class/ Step 2: Play the recording all the way through for pupils to do the Individual work task with the rest of pictures: Picture a, Picture b, and Picture c. Play the recording again for pupils to check their answers. Pair work Step 3: Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check answers together as a class. Say the correct answer again for pupils Individual work to correct their answers. Step 4: Play the recording all the way through for pupils to double- check all the answers. Extension: If time allows, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for the class to listen and repeat in chorus. Correct their pronunciation, where necessary. Activity 5. Read and match 8 minutes

Step 2: Turn on the music and have students pass the ball. Then stop the music. Have students stop to pass the ball. The pupils who have the ball must stand up and practise speaking with their friends. Step 3: Give point to pupils. Step 4: Encourage pupils to practise speaking English. Activity 6. Then he/ she sits down to join the group. One of the previous sitters stands up and goes out to pretend to be a newcomer. He/ She repeats the procedure. One by one, each member of the group repeats the procedure until the last one. – Context 2: Four players are sitting together talking happily. One of them stands up to leave. He/ She says goodbye to the group (Goodbye./ Bye.). The group responds to the leaver (Goodbye./

Option 2: Game: Find a partner Step 1: Divide the class into 2 teams: boys and girls. Prepare the Group work name tags. Step 2: Set the rules: Make a circle, then ask 1 pupil to come stand in the circle and choose a name tag. The one whose name is called will come to the circle and practise speaking by saying Hi, I’m ___. Step 3: Encourage students to join the game. IV. OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to: - to correctly repeat the sounds of the letters h and b in isolation, in the words hello and bye, and in the sentences Hello, Ben. and Bye, Ben. with the correct pronunciation and intonation. - Practice listening and chantting - Self-control & independent learning: perform listening tasks; Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups; - Kindness: help partners to complete learning tasks; Diligence: complete learning tasks; Honesty: tell the truth about feelings and emotions; Responsibility: appreciate kindness; Leadership: collaborate with teachers to enhance language skills II. The pupils who are having the balls will stand up and practise speaking with their friends. Step 3: Give points to the pupils. Step 4: Encourage pupils practice speaking English. 3. Step 2: Play the recording all the way through for pupils to listen to Whole class the whole chant. Encourage them to listen carefully to the rhythm and pronunciation. Draw pupils’ attention to the sounds of the letters h and b and the words Hello and Bye. Whole class Step 3: Play the recording, line by line, for pupils to listen and repeat. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Step 4: Play the recording all the way through for pupils to chant. Whole class Encourage them to clap along while chanting. Extension: Divide the class into two or more groups to take turns Group work listening and repeating the chant while the rest of the class claps along. Fun corner and wrap-up: 5 minutes Game: Sing, do actions, then stop! Step 1: Divide the class into 4 teams. Whole class Step 2: Have pupils sing and dance with the lyrics and rhythm of the chant. Step 3: Invite each team to sing and do actions. When the music stops, Team work all of them have to stop doing actions (freeze). Who can freeze longer will win.

Spend a few minutes revising the previous lesson by having the class say the chant on page 14. – Get the class to open their books on page 15 and look at Activity 4. Get pupils to read the first number together as a class. Elicit the answer and give feedback. Circle the letter b. Step 2: Give pupils time to do the task. Go around the classroom to offer support where necessary. Individual work Step 3: Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check answers Whole class together as a class. Write the correct answers on the board for pupils to correct their answers. 2. Let’s write. 8 minutes Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to three two-person exchanges. Tell Whole class/ them about the activity. Individual work Write the first exchange on the board: Lucy: Hi. I’m Lucy. You: Hello, Lucy. I’m ____ . Elicit the context and the missing words and give feedback. Complete Individual work the sentences. Invite two pupils to role-play the exchange. Step 2: Give pupils time to do the task. Go around the classroom to Pair work offer support where necessary. Step 3: Get pupils to swap books with a partner, then check the Individual work answers together as a class. The one at the back of each line has to say the sentence out loud. Step 4: Give points to the groups who can make it well. Encourage pupils to practise speaking English. Production 3. Project 8 minutes Step 1: Tell pupils about the activity. Stick the pupil card sample on Whole class the board. Write the presentation language on the board. Check comprehension and give feedback. Have pupils repeat the sentences until they can say the sentences by themselves. Model the presentation a few times. Individual work Step 2: Invite a pupil to the front of the classroom to perform the presentation. Watch and offer your support with the language. Step 3: Put pupils into groups to rehearse their pupil card presentation. Go around the classroom to offer support where necessary. Group work Step 4: Invite a few pupils from different groups to show and talk about their pupil cards in front of the classroom. Individual work Extension: Create a class display of pupil cards and vote for the best Whole class decorated one. Fun corner and wrap up: 5 minutes Game: Role play Divide the class into 4 teams.
